Monday

1. Kitchen talk - in groups take turns to tell the others about your kitchen. Use all the words you can think of... gadgets/tools/equipment. The others - listen!

2. For next Monday:

Look around! Transport/Automobiles/Bicycles etc.
Learn the English words for things you use often when it comes to transport. For example when you rent a car abroad what words do you need to know to be able to get the car you want? If there is a problem with the car/bicycle can you describe this in English? Hastighetsmätare, växelspak, framdörr, bensinmätare, bagagelucka, sedan, kombi, vindrutetorkare... korsning, påfart....? Cykelns mest vanliga delar? Vilka ord är värdefulla att känna till på engelska. Användbara? Look them up, write them down today, learn them. Be prepared to write a short text about transport/your bicycle/(family's) car (depending on which words you choose to learn) next Monday...

Pick, write down at least 25 words - but feel free to learn more...

3.
When writing my future texts in English what should I avoid?

Grammar - what do I need to practise?

Most common errors:

Agreement/concord errors = kongruens

If the subject is plural in meaning (more than one), the verb must reflect this by having a plural form. Singular subjects must be followed by a singular verb.

Advice
Concord/agreement errors can be detected by first finding the verb in the sentence (which describes the action) and then the subject (the person doing it). If these have the same number your sentence is appropriate. Note that in spoken language, native speakers may have different ideas (There is two things wrong here...') but this is not acceptable in written English. You need to pay extra attention to English words with a plural meaning, such as 'parliament, police'. These terms refer to groups of people, and they are therefore considered plural ('The Police are investigating the crime scene.').

Inconsistent use of tenses = blandar tempus/tidsformer
Although a number of tense forms are very close in meaning, you fail to use the tenses consistently here. This will create confusion for your reader.

Advice
Avoid using different tense forms in the same section. Be consistent in representing the relationship between the moment an event took place and the moment it is written about. Some general rules apply:
  • If the moment of writing is now, and the event took place in the past (and is now finished), use the past tense form (particularly when a word/phrase is used that indicates the past) 'My first friend was a boy my own age';
  • if the moment of writing is now, and the event took place in the past but is still relevant now, use the perfect tense: 'It has rained';
  • if the moment of writing is now, and the event will take place in the future, use the future tense, 'I take it I will meet your new boss tomorrow'. If the future is very certain, almost a fact, you may use the present tense 'Tonight at six I am off duty';
  • If the moment of writing is now and the event takes place now, use the present tense form: 'I go to the office every Monday';
  • if the moment of writing is in the past, and the event you describe took place before it, use the past perfect form (Had + past participle): 'She said she had met him on the bus to work'.;
  • if the moment of writing is in the past, and the event took place at that moment in the past, use the past tense form: 'She said she was happy';
  • If the moment of writing was in the past, and you wish to describe a situation that occurred later or would occur later, use the perfect future tense form (Would + Have + past participle): 'She was afraid she would have to accompany him to the Azores';
  • If the moment of writing was in the past, and you wish to describe a situation that was one of the options then, but which you did not take at that time, use the perfect past future tense form: 'I would have studied that year if I could have found a decent tutor in mathematics'.
